The Crucible Gym was established to provide training in Winston-Salem, in the philosophy of the Straight Blast Gym International (SBGi). From 2003 until 2005, the Gym was an affiliated training group for the SBGi. Although no longer affiliated with the SBGi, the Crucible Gym continues to train in the same manner using the same principles.

John Kogas the chief instructor, is also a certified JKD instructor under Paul Vunak of Progressive Fighting Systems. His training began in 1978 with a study of Kyokushinkai karate. He has trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu since 1995 as well as boxing, wrestling, silat, muay Thai.
